Growing up, I was enchanted by the world of cooking and baking. Watching cooking shows mesmerized me, especially the art of crafting the perfect fried rice, my fave. At 10, my mom taught me the secrets of this beloved dish. Holding that spatula and pan, I discovered a new imagination. The sizzle of scrambled eggs hitting the pan, the aroma of soy sauce, and the perfect stir-fry of rice was pure magic – chef's kiss! Serving delicious food to loved ones ignited a passion within me.
As the youngest of seven, with a significant age gap between us, I often felt like an only child. My family immigrated to America from the Philippines when I was just thirteen months old. We settled in Orange Cove, California, living in my grandparents' small three-bedroom house with two other families, totaling twenty-five people under one roof, and only one bathroom (crazy, right!) Later, they built a bathroom in the garage.
Seeking better opportunities, my parents contacted his cousin in San Francisco, who offered us a room and helped my parents find jobs. We packed our bags, leaving the fields behind. My mother worked tirelessly as a laundry attendant at the Marriott Hotel (she worked for 25 years), while my father became a bell-person at Canterbury Hotel in downtown SF.
But our newfound hope was short-lived. Just a few months after our move, tragedy struck. My father suffered a stroke at 3 am, and I was only four years old. The image of his eyes rolling back and my mother's cries still haunt me. Losing my Papa was devastating, and our family's world was shattered.
My mother's grief was overwhelming, but she refused to give up. With the help of our extended family, she gradually rebuilt our lives, taking on two jobs to support us. She sneaked me into her workplace when no one was available to watch me. When I started kindergarten, she was able to work more, vowing to provide me with a better education.
Despite financial struggles, my mother secured financial aid for my private school education. I learned valuable lessons from the school 'Bake Sale' and volunteering in the school kitchen, sparking an entrepreneurial spirit within me.
as a teenager, I refined my culinary talents, experimenting with recipes and baking treats for family gatherings. With each new recipe and technique mastered, my ambition grew: to open a cafe and catering business that would unite people through the universal language of flavor and love. My own addiction to coffee and boba drinks only fueled the fire, and I began to envision a vibrant gathering place where every cup and plate would tell a story.
My entrepreneurial spirit was sparked during a school fundraiser, where I sold 500 homemade lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) in just an hour. The thrill of selling out and receiving rave reviews was electrifying. It dawned on me: my cooking could bring joy beyond family gatherings.
College plans were underway, but financial constraints forced me to put my education on hold. Determined to succeed, I entered the workforce, starting at a movie theater as an entry-level employee.
What began as a temporary job became a 16.5-year journey. I progressed from popping popcorn to general manager, learning resilience, adaptability, and leadership. However, the final three years were a whirlwind of frustration and disillusionment. Constant location changes left me feeling undervalued and restless.
when theaters closed during the pandemic, I rediscovered my culinary passion. Cooking and baking for my family brought solace and joy. We started a small catering business, sharing beloved family recipes with the community. Although it lasted only a couple of months, this taste of entrepreneurship rekindled my dreams.
Returning to the movie theater industry proved challenging. The pandemic's aftermath brought harsh realities: box office tickets plummeted, and under performing theaters faced closure. My job security unraveled, and passion faded. Upper management's changes and new policies left me disheartened.
The final straw came unexpectedly, amidst overwhelming personal stresses and work-related pressures. Already exhausted from long hours and lack of teamwork, I faced unjust criticism. Simple requests to stock shelves and clean counters and theaters became ammunition against me, with accusations of being unfair and unprofessional.
I tried to prove my innocence, but my voice was silenced. No one listened to my side of the story. The weight of blame and misunderstanding crushed me. I felt beaten down, like I was being stoned with no escape.
On my last day, when upper management called me into the GM's office, citing concerns about my performance. It was clear; I was being pushed out. No longer valued, I felt drained and underappreciated. Three years without a raise, and then a mere $0.50 increase as a salaried manager, confirmed my decision.
I realized I couldn't win this battle because when they asked me to transfer, and it was to a closing building. It was a hard NO for me. My friends and family, witnessing my struggles, were relieved when I decided to leave. They knew the toll this job took on my well-being.
Quit my job? Terrifying. Yet, it held a silver lining. For the first time in years, I had the freedom to explore, learn, and rediscover myself.
As I stepped away from the chaos, I finally had time to: Breathe, Reflect, & Recharge. I started by reconnecting with loved ones, nurturing relationships that had suffered during my intense work periods. Bedtime stories and prayers, family dinners, movie nights, holiday cheers, birthday parties, slow mornings, and lazy Sundays became my new norm. And let's not forget, fangirling at K-pop concerts and binge-watching K-dramas (Saranghae: Korean - "I love you"). Last one, promise: the freedom to travel.
With this newfound freedom, I unleashed my creative side. I rekindled my passion for cooking, experimenting with innovative recipes and flavors. I dusted off my camera, capturing life's beauty through photography. Next, I laced up my tennis shoes and walked along nature's path in the Bay Area, discovering hidden gems in various parks. Content creation became a thrilling outlet, unleashing my creativity and accumulating plenty of bloopers. Then, I rediscovered reading, devouring books that transported me to new worlds. Weekly library visits became a sacred ritual, surrounding myself with words that ignited curiosity and expanded my horizons. The best part? I got to explore different cafes for inspiration and "work." Little did I know, this was just the beginning of an extraordinary journey...
